What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core practice of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that supports the body’s vital energy, known as qi (pronounced chi). The body’s qi flows through meridians. When the qi is interrupted or unbalanced, the disharmony can lead to a variety of health concerns.

More than 2,000 acupuncture points are located within the body’s meridians. The practice of acupuncture taps into these points with fine, sterile needles to redirect and balance the qi as needed.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Placement of the needles along key points of the body’s meridians causes key reactions to support the body’s health. These reactions can include, but are not limited to:

Relaxation & Pain Reduction

Acupuncture has been shown to release tension on joints and bones. In a 2018 study looking at the effects of acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis, researchers found that acupuncture treatments lead to a “significant reduction of pain and increased knee joint flexion amplitude and mobility.”

Blood Flow

In a 2012 study, researchers found that “acupuncture can affect blood flow of the peripheral, mesenteric, and retrobulbar arteries.” By increasing the blood flow to targeted areas of the body, your acupuncturist can promote your body's natural ability to heal itself.

Lymphatic Swelling

A 2020 review of regulating lymphangiogenesis using acupuncture showed that it “has an explicit effect on the regulation of lymphatic regeneration.” This ability to influence the lymphatic regeneration signals that acupuncture can be used to reduce swelling and promote healing.
